Most of the research activities presented on this website evolved from supervising gradu-
ate and doctoral students. It was a great pleasure to work with these motivated and inspir-
ing young persons.
•
But none of the projects could have really been realized without the excellent support by
an engaged laboratory team. Special thanks to Jürgen Pfuhl, Gerd Neufeld, Günther Helm-
rich, Hans-Peter Herda and Marion Kollmeier.
•
The School of Electrical Engineering provides good facilities and excellent laboratory equip-
ment. Many projects were supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and by in-
dustrial cooperations.
•
Special thanks to my colleagues
- Prof. Dr. Günter Guthöhrlein (HSU HH) for a continuous excellent cooperation in laser
spectroscopy,
- Prof. Dr. Daniel Grischkowsky (IBM & OSU-Ok) for our successful cooperation in
Femtosecond Terahertz Spectroscopy. Regrettably, he passed away in June 2022.
- Prof. Dr. Murry Salby (Bolder Col. USA; Sidney Australia) for many important contributions
and stimulating discussions in Climate Sciences. Unfortunately, he passed away in April
2022.
- Dr. Willie Soon and Dr. Ronan Connolly (Center for Environmental Research and Earth
Sciences (CERES, Salem, MA, USA) for a close cooperation in the field of Climate Sciences.
Physics & Climate
This Website presents a summary of the main research activities
•
as Professor for Laser Engineering & Materials Science,
from 2001 - 2009 also for Experimental Physics,
at the Helmut-Schmidt-University Hamburg (HSU HH), Germany,
•
as Visiting Scientist at IBM-Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights,
•
as Visiting Scientist at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma,
•
and on special fields of Climate Sciences after retiring 2010.
Preliminary Notes
Experimental Physics and Materials Science are basic disciplines for academic studies of Engi-
neering Sciences. At the Helmut-Schmidt-University these subjects are integrated in the School
of Electrical Engineering to teach undergraduates of Electrical Engineering and Economic Engi-
neering in these disciplines.
For advanced-level studies specialized programs on laser applications, spectroscopy, quantum
optics and opto-electronics are offered with the possibility for young scientists to accomplish
their studies with a master or doctoral degree.
The research activities of the Laser-Physics-Group were mainly focusing on applications of lasers
in science and engineering. A compilation of these activities is listed under the link:
Laser Research
The research activities in Climate Science, which started in 2010, are summarized under the link:
Climate.
